What Content Will YOU Produce For the iPad?
I’ve seen a lot of skeptics online lately, dismissing the iPad before it’s even released! In fact, many assume the iPad is all hype and no substance. While there may be some wonky specs and some room for technical improvements at first, the reality is that the iPad could very well be the next massive breakthrough in content delivery, interaction and absorption*.
I’m not talking videos or Google Maps—although those will be VERY slick. I’m talking about the print content you and I curl up with.
*Yes…I created a new phrase. “Content Absorption.” The standard term, “Content Consumption” always bugged me. What? Like we’re eating it?
iPad Will Make Print Taste Even Better!
Books
Think the iPad will just be a glorified Kindle? The guys over at Penguin books tell the story best in their recent video release. In fact, this is the video that transformed me from skeptic to potential early adopter. A Kindle it is not.
Imagine stepping into your textbook’s diagrams and spinning them into whatever position you need. What if your child’s books could travel with you wherever you go and become interactive toys with a single twist? How about that trip to the museum? Scrap that tired brochure. You now have a digital docent ready to walk you through the museum room by room.
Magazines
What if your favorite magazine included motion and animation? Stick around though the first few minutes of the video below and see how magazines, photographers and artists can share their content like never before. Viv magazine is one of the first to jump on the concept.
What’s Next?
Imagine what else will be possible with the iPad! A few ideas that come to mind:
- Instruction Manuals – I can actually SEE how to put our new desk set together as the iPad talks me through each step. Hmm… would have been very handy this past weekend. Are you listening, IKEA?
- Exercise Guides – So that bicept curl goes up and back…or back and up? Luckily my iPad is with me and is large enough to see (unlike the iPhone), but not so bulky that it gets in the way (unlike the laptop).
- Tours! – We touched on this above, but it’s worth delving in deeper. Disney could now give guests a virtual version of its “Keys to the Kingdom” tour…with “xray” vision of its hidden underground tunnels beneath Main street, glimpses into what’s behind the walls of the haunted mansion and a virtual tour of what takes place behind the scenes of its Light Parade. Think that can be done with an iPhone or iPad? The main difference is size.
- Cookbooks! – This is where my heart gets all aflutter! I love to cook but when I’m busy I tend to steer clear of ingredients I don’t recognize or techniques I don’t understand. Now, I can imagine that the iPad can be propped where my old cookbook used to be, ready to deliver answers and inspire creativity in the kitchen. Again, the difference is I would never dare bring my laptop into my kitchen. But the iPad is gearing up to be rugged and mobile!
Chime In!
